RaceDepartment Historic Grand Prix Season 7 – Round 6

Welcome to back to Round 6 of RDHGP S7.

After an intense Round 5 we again got no reported incidents, which can only be viewed as a good thing.

There isn’t really too much to say about Ricard, to be honest – the track didn’t really allow too much cheating on the kerbs – certainly not as much as at Singapore, and so the race was pretty much won and lost within the confines of the circuit, like it is meant to be.

Round 6 takes us back across the Atlantic, over 5,600 miles South West, and the 1979 layout of the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace – known to all and sundry as Interlagos – in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

proginterlagos79.jpgCircuit Notes
One of the great natural sporting amphitheatres, Interlagos combines gradients with high speed sweeps and a technically demanding infield sections. The circuit that the RDHGP is running is original 7.9km, 16 turn circuit, rather than the current one that was reduced down to 4.3km in 1990. It is also our second anti-clockwise circuit of the season (Singapore is the other).

The first Brazilian Grand Prix was run at Interlagos, on this layout, in 1972, and ran there until 1980 (with a break in 1978). South American drivers had a virtual stranglehold on the event from 1972-77, Reutemann (2 wins), Fittipaldi(2) & Pace(1) only broken up in 1976 by Niki Lauda. Rene Arnoux won the final Brazilian GP on the full layout in 1980 in his Renault. The Brazilian GP relocated for a 9 year stint at Jacarepagua, before returning to the newly shortened Interlagos in 1990, Alain Prost’s victory maintaining the French success.

Those drivers familiar with the modern Interlagos corner names will need to consult the map, as there are a few current naming conventions on the 79 track, but in different places, so confusion is a possibility here. As an example, on the 79 layout, Juncao (where Hamilton took Glock to win his title) is not the corner that starts the climb to the S/F line, in 79 it is the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] turn that marks the track’s first time it folds back into the infield section.
On a positive note, Ferradura makes more sense on this layout when compared to the modern circuit, because the profile actually looks like a horseshoe.

A lap of Interlagos 79 starts with a very high speed section (as opposed to the current Senna Esses), and on all laps after the start, you will be approaching this at top speed. A breathe of accelerator or a tiny dab of brakes for T1L Curva 1, a high speed turn that drops away down and left onto a short downhill blast before T2L – Curva 2, another very high speed bend, also left and flattening onto the long Retao Straight.

At the end of the straight we approach T3L – Curva 3, a medium speed corner that requires some pretty heavy braking, which again drops away left, but once out of there, we are had on the gas again for the squirt downhill to T4L – Juncao. T4L is shallow, and you can attack it quite aggressively, opening out onto the uphill straight before the heavy uphill braking zone for T5L – Ferradura (the Horseshoe).

Ferradura is essentially a wide radiused hairpin, requiring balance on the car, good grip and a lot of patience to not let your right foot get you out of shape. The apex is the highest point of the turn, and the exit is downhill. Successfully negotiating Ferradura it’s a short blast downhill to our first righthander of the lap, T6R – Subida do Lago.

Wide radiused and climbing on exit, it is another test of patience and setup, exiting onto the Reta Opsota uphill straight. Some braking and setting the car up nice and early for the huge T7R – Curva do Sol. This huge radiused 180 turn can be taken fast if you get the nose in tight and provoke a little drift from the rear, but that’s a risk/reward strategy that you will have to balance depending on your car choice and confidence in your setup.

Out of Curva do Sol, it’s a short downhill straight for T8L – Curva do Sargento. A virtual mirror image of Ferradura, it’s a relatively wide hairpin, with its apex at the lowest point of the turn and an uphill exit.

A short uphill straight takes you to T9R – Estacionamento. From this point on, the circuit drives very similarly to the current layout, Estcionamento opening onto a short section behind the pits before getting hard on the brakes for T10R – Laranja.

Laranja is a tight entry with an exit dropping away downhill, not really allowing much time before the entry to T11L – Pinheirinho. Getting the nose in early here is vital for a decent exit, letting the car drift to the right, across the slight kink before standing on the anchors for T12R – Cotovelo.

Easily the tightest corner on this layout, it is a double apexed turn, not always readily apparent when you are approaching it, but the ideal line for exit of the second apex could leave space for a dive up the inside, and as I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, that’s my cue for a Race Directors Note lower down. Leaving Cotovelo there’s a surge of acceleration, throwing the nose at the inside apex of T13L – Mergulho, avoiding the car destabilising inner kerb as much as possible, heading downhill before again hard braking as the track bottoms and starts to climb for the unnamed T14L.

T14L is the corner now called Juncao on the current layout, and despite its lack of title, it’s just as vital that a good exit is made from here. The difference here is that T14L is much shallower than the modern Juncao, so rather than a “brake, throw it across the apex, stamp on the gas” approach, it’s a longer, more deliberate balancing act to get the correct exit.

From there, it’s all flat out accelerating uphill, taking T15L - Subida dos Boxes flat out across it’s gentle apex, negotiating T16L – Arquibancadas – also flat out – with its pit entry line and sudden pit wall end, still racing uphill before we reach the highest point on the track at the S/F line, and a nother lap of this fearsome circuit begins.

The Race Director has some notes for drivers. Please see the track map above for location of Race Direction note:-

All Corners Without Exception – The kerbs are not deemed as track, therefore 2 wheels must be within the white lines, on the tarmac, At All Times. Again, there are NO exceptions to this rule at any point on the circuit. Any exception to this rule is deemed illegal, any advantage gained by this method must be ceded immediately. Report people deliberately and excessively cutting.

Racing Room must be given to all drivers – and this works both ways. Divebombing into and across a corner denies people the chance to make the corner correctly just as much as someone obliviously (or deliberately) cutting the nose off of another driver who has achieved partial overlap fairly.

Regain the track safely - If you leave the track, you must rejoin the track safely. If that means losing another couple of places – so be it.

General Corners
- The 79 layout, like the real life state of the tracks, had very few concrete or grippy run off areas when compared to the modern layout. It is pretty much a Track -> Grass proposition, and at the speeds we are going, recovery might be more of a hope than a likelihood. There are a lot of wide sweeps, dependent on chassis grip, tyre wear and throttle control, and all of these variables will change based on period of the race, damage incurred, type of vehicle etc. Be aware and ready for things to get a bit hairy in these corners suddenly an seemingly out of the blue.

T12R – Covotelo
– As mentioned above, the only real corner of concern for me is T12R. Covotelo can be taken wide on entry to lessen the compromise on the exit, but this is NOT an excuse for a reckless lunge up the inside of the first part. Visibility is almost non-existent, and the people taking the wide line will be turning in early to maximise that wide entry they took. Just parking your car on the inside apex is not winning the corner, and is not going to win you any friends on the track, or in the Drivers panel if you get reported for contact due to this sort of dive.

All points on the track – General Items
No lights are to be flashed at any stage, under any circumstances, during the race.
No Chat during the Quali or Race except by Race Control for information.
Car damage must be assessed realistically to know if it is possible to make the pits or not.

Incidents, Investigations and Penalties
There were no reported racing incidents arising from Round4.
2 drivers incurred a “No-Show” infraction:
  • Carlos Diaz
  • Neil Tasker
Carlos will carry this No-Show infraction for one race. If he allocates correctly for that race, the Infraction will be lifted.
1 of these drivers are now removed from the League for 2 consecutive No-Show:
  • Neil Tasker
Please remember, the League staff will only review incidents if they are reported to them.

No report = no review.
Please try and remember the incident reporting guidelines: review, cool off, review again. Only after following the above process, and if you are convinced you still need to report it, should you let the League staff know. Please give as much information as possible during the report (time of incident, drivers involved etc.) Accident reports made within 24 hours of race completion will be ignored.

Any accusations or complaints aired in the Chat during or after a race will mean a penalty levied on the person complaining or making the accusations, even if a subsequent official complaint gets found in their favour. I simply will NOT tolerate any post race finger pointing.

Liveries

You have chosen your car and livery already, and you must only drive your chosen car at any time during an RDHGP event. Every driver has a unique livery in this season of RDHGP.

Liked the track. I thought I did reasonably well, but couldn't compare, since both my Abarth companions were MIA.

Started okay, got behind Erling, but then lost control. Power on, and caught some grass I guess, went off and hit the barrier. Damage, couldn't get within 2 seconds of my practice and quali times after that.

Was driving close to Hans most of the race, both of us made a lot of mistakes. I made the last one, ended up 10 seconds behind him, 3 laps to go. Couldn't close the gap, hoped he'd make a mistake.
But then, disaster . Ross and Dmytro caught up, and lapped me in their final lap, 5 metres before the finish line :D. Hans made it through to do another lap, and made a couple of mistakes. If only... :D

Congrats to the podium, thanks to Stuart and everyone else involved :thanks:

Sorry again, i was going to lift but I wasn't sure how far behind Dmytro was as i had lifted off the last few corners and was just focusing ahead. The car was really getting a bit out of control towards the end, so i had to keep focused!

LOL, no need, was kidding in chat. Winning the race by a 2 second margin is a bit more important than maybe having a chance of catching up and battling it out for 16th place :fwd:

Ah, right, hope I didn't compromise anyone's racing line there. Those things are bloody fast.

Close as you like during practice/qualie, Ivo & Dmytro made better starts than me, and were through after turns 1 & 2, with Nils right in the mix in the opening couple of laps. After a while i got a good run on Dmytro, overtook, but then ran wide while pushing really hard. Got back past again later on and set about catching Ivo ahead. Luckily for me he made a mistake a few laps in exiting turn 2, and i was able to slip down the inside at turn 3, and turn my attentions to Andreas who was now nearly 8s ahead with half the race gone.
As the race wore on, the gap was staying constant until Andreas must've made a mistake and this brought me within 2s. It was apparent he was struggling for grip, and after being cut-up a couple of times on one lap i hung back and bided my time until eventually he spun at one of the hairpins, collecting me as i rounded the turn. Fortunately i could continue, but now had Dmytro charging up from behind, running some quick laps, so i had to maintain concentration for the rest of the race and not make any mistakes.

Thanks Thommo/RD, and well done Dmytro & Ivo. Cheers guys.

Q: Was my max i think. 3rd on the grid.

Race: Had a good start and nipped infront of Ross.
Andreas pulled away fast and i pulled away abit from Ross and Dmytro as they where fighting.
But after that i was already making small mistakes. So Ross passed me and after that i fighted off Dmytro. But had a big moment in one of the corners so lost that place. Could follow abit and managed to overtake Andreas as he was struggeling with tyres.
Last laps i was just crap. Couple of small mistakes and one big one in the last lap. Was glad it was over, as the track is not going on my personal favorite list. Was struggeling way to much on it. Lucky to get 3rd. But points are points at the end of the season. :)

Grats to Ross and Dmytro and thanks to Stu. :)

Sorry I left last night I was driving round then I got a poxy nose bleed lol it was all down me top I tryed to keep going but it was to mesy lol see you all next race.

Yes, it is very difficult in this situation to keep going. :frown: Wayne, I hope that now everything is ok?

My report.

Q:
At the end of quali, I set the best time for me, but I understand that I could and must be better (the results of the first three cause to think so). 4th place on start.

R: Normal start, some battle for the starting laps, skipped ahead Ross, because I knew that he isobviously faster than me, and I do not see any reason to balk at the very beginning of the race. So - 4th place. I managed to keep Nils on the first laps, he pressed forward pretty well. Then, I tried to hold on to the rate of Ivo and Ross.
By the end of the race, ahead of me, guys started to make mistakes and I managed to get to the second position! But what I was really surprised - it's that I not only managed to hold my new position quite comfortably, but I started to approach Ross a bit! Perhaps I could better preserve the tires. But Ross, as always, was very reliable and did not give me a chance to get closer to a distance of attack.
As a result, an unexpected and pleasant second place at the finish. So close to the leader, I have never finished in RDHGP.

WD to Ross and Ivo, and individually - to Andreas, who established a great time in qualifying. But he was unlucky again in race, yet the load on tires for the Corvette is pretty high.

Thanks to all participants and to Stu for the event!

Yeah every thing is fine now bud it was only bleeding for about 10 mins. It was just stress I think had one of them weeks lol Thanks for asking mate. its members like you that make my point about the GTL drivers more and more true that they are the best members on RD thanks again :)

Well after some practice offline I got to like this track very much so with that in mind I thought good for the race. During the online practice sesson I manged to put in my quickest time so far but then looked at what Lenno had done & thought I must be missing a cylinder or 2, great times there Lenno.

Into quali we went & again picked up my pace for another pb but again Lenno & now Jay posting times nearly 2 seconds faster so had to settle for 11th on the grid. Maybe I need to look at them in replay to see where that time is, lol.

Now the race, got a great start and must have made up aleast 5 spots as I was behind Lenno & Jay out of T1 & into T2. Out of T2 & Lenno goes wide so picked up another place there but with Carlos & Nigel behind in there coupes I knew down the long straight they would be passing me. This did happen but out of T4 Carlos had a big lag so I made slight contact with him which allowed Neil to get by along with Wayne & David in there Escorts. Re-grouped and set about catching Wayne but this was not easy as now the track favoured the Escort more but manged to hold the gap. After lap 2 I started to close the gap to Wayne & on lap 3 we started to swap places a few times, me passing down the straights, Wayne getting underneath me in the corners. This was good stuff but on lap 4 wiith me trying to make a pass stick Wayne takes a sudden trip off track but now reading his post this may have been due to the blood flowing from his nose. After that I again had a gap to DC but was closing it down lap on lap. Was again looking forward to a nice little battle with an Escort when DC goes wide allowing me an easy ovetake. After this things settled down as Carlos, remember him, was 10 seconds up the road. As we got to lap 10 the gap was now down to 6 seconds so I pushed hard & over the next 3 laps closed the gap down it just over a second. With another few more scary lags from Carlos he managed to just keep me at bay until the finish line where I crossed it belive it or not 11th.

Thanks to Thommo/Rd, grts to Rossco & wd rest of podium.

Just about qualified as the fastest Escort (only because Bob Miley wasn't racing of course). Scrappy first lap, mostly avoiding the lag/warping of Carlos. After that I was pretty much on my own for many laps.

Eventually, Stuart's Jag started to figure in my rear mirrors creeping closer and closer. Only a matter of time before the pass came but for entertainment value, I managed to keep it as close as possible for the remainder of the race, finishing a second or so behind.

The Escort felt great around this track. Pity it's not got just a bit more grunt but still a great car to drive none the less.

Sorry about the lagging boys. I'm currently using one of those tiny USB networking adaptors. I'm gonna put a real wireless card in there and see if it solves the problem. I don't think I've ever had bad lag before and hopefully wont again.

Anyone else using the net wirelessly here? How is it? Or should I find a way to hard wire it?

Carlos, if you can possibly hardwire it then do so. Wireless will ALWAYS drop random packets no matter how close or how good the connection is.

My good start got cancelled out at T1 when i had to panic anchor up to avoid going in to the back of the surprisingly slow power cars just ahead,so wide and slow out of T1 and i was completely engulfed by loads of cars, approaching T2 braking zone Carlos' lagging ghost came bungee'ing back a couple of hundred meters in to me and off i went at T2 dropping almost to the back, clawed back what i could and then wandered around on my own to the finish.
Grats Rosso and podiums

Thank you Stu/Hutch & RD

First time I had some Fun in this league, but it started not like that, in ofline practice I have cursed this track running 10 laps with not one timed lap, after chancing an chancing an .... setups I finely had a setup that keeps me on track most of the time, only the long right handers give me some trouble.

In Q shaved 1.5 sec of my time an was pleased with that an started to like the track !

Race start on the back as usual not a great start but on my way ,Erling closing in a hurry an past me in the first chicane on the inside an my first of was there !
After that I had a nice race with Senad making mistakes ad random but with a smile ,the last mistake was for Senad an I managed to take some distance, Fin without being Lapped !!! lol

Grats Ross an podium, thanks Stuart an all who participated.

Had a good race, quali in 6th and a pb which was nice...:) with Gary .1 sec right behind. Got a good start but Gary passed going in to the first turn but ran wide and on the grass which put me back in 6th. It stayed like that for the first half of the race with Nigel right behind and got pretty close a few times but just managed to stay in front. About half race in i got a bit of a gap as it looked like he was having troubles in the corners and then Neil got passed and up in to 7th and slowly started to catch. With about 5 laps or so to go i started to catch Nils who was having some big trouble in some corners with grip, and with a couple of laps left he lost it in a slow left and put me up to 5th and me best finish of the season so far.....:).

This was me best lap of the race a 3.15.5.....
