Welcome to the Race Department Historic Grand Prix Season 4 (RDHGP S4)

The RDHGP League staff welcome you to the 2009 RDHGP S4. Some of you we welcome for the first time in this league, while to some we bid a welcome return.

We have moved up a class from last year’s GTC65s, and are using a selected field of 9 cars conforming to the FIA GTC-TC-76 specifications & regulations. The season will run over 8 races, 7 races over a distance of 100km, plus the season finale over a distance of 200km on the world famous Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans in its 1977 configuration.

The 100km races will be run on alternating Thursdays commencing 29th October 09, with the season finale running on Saturday 20th February 10. There will be a Christmas and New Year break after round 4 on 10th December 09, with round 5 on 14th January 10.

This season, we continue with our policy of travelling the globe to some of the world’s finest circuits, keeping to a strict one race per country policy. We will be driving in 8 countries across 3 continents, all with hopefully a unique challenge to present to our drivers, and so allow the extremely varied vehicles to shine as the circumstances allow.

While by its very nature, the League environment is more competitive than the Club environment, please remember what makes the GTL Club so unique – our consideration for all other competitors at all times. Let’s try and carry this tradition of clean, fun and considerate racing over into a League environment. It worked well last season, and I will be demanding the same level of sportsmanship and courtesy this season. I would expect people to wait for someone they have taken off, even if it was accidental. In addition, if anyone has a problem with another driver, I will be just as hard on the person with the grievance if they do not adhere to the guidelines.

As with last season, discussions about laptimes - even if it is to say what has been achieved with an uploaded setup - is forbidden. Turning up last season and seeing roughly who you would be battling against only added to the anticipation, so we will keep this rule in place for S4.

Circuit Notes

Australia’s Albert Park was re-opened for racing in 1996, the makeover including a complete resurfacing, making it one of the smoothest tracks on the calendar. It is an ideal opening venue, as it is fast, relatively simple to learn, without any overly difficult or awkward corners. The downside to that is that you may have to wait for mistakes to allow a clean overtake – and I expect all overtakes to be as clean as possible.

In our 76 cars, we will not be troubling Michael Schumacher’s track record of 1.24.125, set in his 2004 Ferrari, and maybe Stirling Moss’s original circuit record of 1.50.000, set in 1958 in a Cooper Climax, is still outside our scope of performance, but I expect some very fast, close racing, with the relative car performance differences on various parts of the track making the gaps very much a variable to give some interesting challenges and battles.

For some this is the first RDHGP event, as they missed the Testing event, and so I would hope that they use the Practice session to the maximum to assess the difference in braking points and acceleration performance across the field. I won’t be too impressed at people wiping out swathes of competitors because they under- or over-estimated their own cars braking performance, or the cars around them.

The Race Director has some notes for drivers. Please see the track map above for location of Race Direction note:-
  • The Start / Finish straight is wide, with scope for manouever, and a relatively long run down to T1R. This, coupled with the disparity in car performance off the line, may mean that this is seen by some people as a good opportunity to make some cheap places. I would hope that we are all calm enough to realise that you can only lose a race in the first corner, and not win it. I will not be posing a non-overtake rule there, but people who charge in recklessly and ruin other people’s races will be penalised – whether there is an incident report filed or not.

  • T1R, T3R & T11R are guarded on the outside by gravel traps, and so drivers recovering the tracks will need to be aware and vigilant of race traffic.

  • T10R is the second half of a set of fast Esses – two wheels within the white lines on exit at all times.

  • The Pitlane Entrance is on the outside of the penultimate turn, and people may choose to pit for damage repair, so all drivers should keep 2 wheels within the white lines unless pitting.
Incidents, Investigations and Penalties

As this is round 1 there are no outstanding Incidents, Investigations nor Penalties.
Please remember, the League staff will only review incidents if they are reported to them.

No report = no review.

Please try and remember the incident reporting guidelines: review, cool off, review again. Only after following the above process, and if you are convinced you still need to report it, should you let the League staff know. Please give as much information as possible during the report (time of incident, drivers involved etc.)

Any accusations or complaints aired in the Chat during or after a race will mean a penalty levied on the person complaining or making the accusations, even if a subsequent official complaint gets found in their favour. I simply will NOT tolerate any post race finger pointing.

Liveries

You have chosen your car and livery already, and you must only drive your chosen car at any time during an RDHGP event. Every driver has a unique livery in this season of RDHGP.

Scoring System

I have extended the points distribution method down to P20 (75% distance completion required) so people can fight for some points no matter where they are on the track, and hopefully have a season long battle with people around them in the League.

Im going to need to dig deep to get my chin up for the next round, personal pride and a close to perfect "not nurfing people" rep took a knock lastnight, very reminiscent of round 1 Monza at the RDNGP.
A true total disaster of a race from start to finish,i think i have to prepare for the next round a bit better, doing my first laps arriving for practice beginning just isnt enough...

Looks like 10tacle REALLY brought across the difficulty of these cars, as they would be like that back in the day too.

The escort feels quite real to drive in the sence but mine is nothing like the touring cars spec of the day :skywalker:

This is the sim I wish I had a steering wheel for.

man alive... I cant beleive you drive on the keys..:tremble:
hats off to you just for that :highfive:

Starting from 6th on the grid, I got safely around the first corner incident ahead and into 4th behind Peter D. Our leading group of 4 started to pull a gap from the pack and I watched as the two Peters battled it out in front of me. On lap 4 Peter D passed Peter G and I managed to follow him through into 3rd.

A great hard-fought battle with Peter G then started at this point with him pressuring hard to pass but on lap 6 I had a mechanical problem. You see, I've got my wheel bolted to my desk and I felt the bolt drop out, down onto my feet! This was only going to cause later problems.

On lap 7, Peter G at last managed to force his way past me but I wasn't finished yet and got back into 3rd a few corners later. Next lap and Peter got past again but he ran wide into the second last corner and I follow him onto the grass. By the time I get back onto the black stuff I'm back in 7th.

Behind Jay now for the next lap when the inevitable happens and my wheel come away from the desk around as I'm turning hard into the last two corners. Luckily, the home straight gives me a chance to clamp it back on but I've lost some seconds and I now have Piotr on my back. We have a good scrap for a few laps as Jay up ahead makes a mistake. Now in 6th and I start getting my confidence back, slowly pulling away from Piotr and chasing the group ahead, eventually catching them. Back on Peter G's bumper again (he must be getting tired of seeing me in his mirror by now) as we chase Jari.

Peter gets through but I can't follow him. Down the long home straight and I get a slipstream from Jari. Pulling out, I've got the inside line and my nose in front as we turn into the first corner and Jari catches the rear of my car, putting him into a spin - a racing incident I think. Now chasing Peter G again. Another few wheel incident that I cope with but I can't quite catch Peter, crossing the line in 5th place.

Great race and superb driving from all drivers around me - thanks guys.

Wrestling these cars around here absolutely killed my wrists (I'm sure you've heard), but I've never felt anything like it. I've done a 2 hour Mini Enduro and the pain then wasn't a patch on this race. Looks like 10tacle REALLY brought across the difficulty of these cars, as they would be like that back in the day too. This is the sim I wish I had a steering wheel for.

Even then it's hard going mate. It was quite a demanding race, my arms and shoulders where aching after the event. Worth the pain though :)

Connection last night was OK during praccy and qual, but GTL crashed 2 times (complete system lock up, frozen picture, no sound, hard reset only), so I decided not to enter qual 2 minutes before end, because i knew it will crash again after X minutes. I will test GTL online and stability in Vista next week (GTL and all other games are installed in XP, and only GTL and GTR2 are crashing), wish me luck. :)
Congrats to podium and all finishers.

Give me some days... I first need to forget how i hate this car now... Otherwise the report will be pretty depressive... :D

Saying sorry is absolutely the right thing to do, but we all know it's not deliberate.

So chin up, and look towards that 'Vettes home event in 2 weeks time.

Hehe i already did some laps on "the Glenn". The track is more suited for the car and i really like it, lots of medium fast corners instead of hard braking points. But you will figure that i don't really like the chicane on the straight. :D

I had a crack at the glenn this morning jsut to check it worked ok, don't quite trust this PC top work yet...i wonder why.

I think i'll do much better next time, i think the car will work much better round that track as i can keep the revs up and stop it dropping off the boost all the time. Turn one looks like it'll make yourn race though, get it perfect and the speed boost through the first part of the lap will be awesome.

Cant wait to get back on track and put last nights dismal performance down to first night nerves.

I am having complete lock ups with Watkins :(

I am trying to change settings around but nothing.

I also just installed the latest Catalyst and Display drivers, lets see if that does the trick. If not, it looks like I will sit this one out.

P.S. I am beginning to hate ATI cards. I have an HD3870, I can run the game with everything maxed out, but on certain add-on tracks it just crashes. I think I am the only one having this problem too.

Yup, they are all off.

I am now messing with the sound options for Vista. Setting the quality down a bit, I am running out of ideas here.

I am so close to going out and buying an Nvidia card!!!!
Mate, I have big problems with GTL and GTR2 with nvidia 8800gts. Complete lock ups offline/online, after 5 or 50 minutes, totally random. I heard that is a Forceware fault but I doubt. Maybe my Creative SB Live 2 is problem with current creative drivers, but it's strange because all other games are stable (including rfactor) like a rock.
I've read on other forums that nvidia and latest forceware drivers are not "combatible" with gmotor2 games. Lots of simracers are using old drivers, because they are stable in gmotor2. I don't want to install old drivers just because GTL inst' working properly. :(
