After Rd1 at Imola, we travel a short distance to the Principality of Monaco for Rd 2 of the AC F3 Championship. We will be racing on the 1988 version with the old pit lane and no kerbs defining some of the chicanes, just full on Armco barriers to really test you, however, this is a double header Sprint event with 2 x 25 minute races.

  • 2 x 25 minute races (pit stop optional).

Free practice is running. It's the 1988 version we are using. DRS is enabled (a short burst on the start 'straight'. :thumbsup:
 
Hi everyone. Any setup suggestion other than setting the aero at its maximum? I tried a few laps yesterday and I had to decrease the brake power to 90% or I'd lock the brake in almost every corner.
Reference point for braking after the tunnel is really hard to find :redface:

I only just seen your post from yesterday.
You are welcome to my set up but it's probably no different from yours as we are usually very close in pace. All I have done from my usual set up is to take the aero up to F21/R22 and decreased diff coast to get a bit more rotation. But I am currently way of the pace but will be testing more later this afternoon.

If anyone else can give us backmarkers some pointers that would be great.

This is the setup i am using for now, feel free to try it. Probably will fiddle a bit more with it though but for now a low 27 is possible with it.

I dont have the rear earo maxed cause i think it will give a bit better rotation into those tight corners, front is maxed out.

Tip for reference braking point after tunnel: the tall streetlighting on the right, i think i use the 3rd from the top of my head.

That's very kind of you Allard, I have just given it a go and already a vast improvement. :thumbsup:

It's great when the really quick guys help out, I know you don't want to give all your secrets away but for us earthlings just to have the confidence to max out our abilities really gives us a boost.

But just like the real Monaco, tonight will be tough,
 
I made some small changes in the setup and was able to improve my time so i like to think they work. Mainly more suspension travel which i feel gives a bit more stability and traction especially on the bumpy like t1 where acceleration is quite tricky due to the bumpiness.
 
was good i knew it from the start that was going to be hard with only wings and sligthly camber i was not able to match not even the speed of the p11 out of the corners in race1, where i was gaining alot was the braking points . with low fuel i was able somehow to put the car on pole , noticed from the start Allard in sector2 he was having more turn in fortunatly for me he made a mistake . Congratz to Jason for p1 race2 well deserved . noticed just now a setup was shared here on the forum :notworthy:

Well done podiums but really well done everyone, that was the most intense two 25 minutes races ever! Full on concentration every second of every lap.
You can see what Senna meant when he said he seemed to be in a different place and driving at a higher level.
The standard of driving was excellent from what I saw, both starts were very clean and everyone got away and through the Lowes hairpin without drama.
I’ll take a look at the replays tomorrow and put some words together. If anyone has any comments/insight on their race then drop me a pm, i can use it in the reports.
 
I didn't plan on joining this race considering how all the previous races have gone but i enjoyed the Monaco the last couple of days so decided to give it a go. joined practice earlier than normal for me to give it my best shot.

Managed 3rd in qualifying somehow, don't know if i have ever started in the top 5 in this car so was happy with that. Unfortunately lap 1 in the race i touched the barrier and spun and had to watch the whole field drive by before i could turn around. overtaking around here was very difficult, Steve put up a good fight but eventually made a mistake and i could sneak past only to crash a few laps later and give the position to Hank, luckily this put me in 7th for the reverse grid next race.

Race two went a lot better no big mistake just lots of little ones, luckily the fast drivers all got stuck in traffic allowing me to run away. Spent most of the race going for a very fast lap but could never put a whole lap together that i was fully happy with but i will take the win and be happy with that.

That felt like the proper Monaco experience :p

I used Allard's v1 setup (didn't notice the v2 version), it felt great, thanks for sharing!

Qualifying was very frustrating as I had -0.2 ~ -0.4 on every lap and didn't get it together on ran into cars. I'm sure it was the same for everyone.

Race 1 I was close to Thomas for the whole race. He warped a few times and one time we collided but I had no idea where his car was for a moment there. Luckily it hadn't impacted either of us much. Happy with P3!

Not sure if reverse grid was a good idea here with no chances to overtake unless someone made a mistake. I would have preferred a 60 min race actually. Race was following the train of cars pretty much. I got a slight tap from behind which lost me one position in the end.

I'm happy with the pace and consistency I had. No crashes for both races really from my end. Even felt quite comfortable running Monaco and that is when it starts to feel fun around this track I think.

Oh man, that dropped me to 6th in the championship :cautious:

Fulvio Fenix top scored in this double header but it was Jason Bagley who had a good drive in race two with a flag to finish win.

Qualifying was always going to be critical at Monaco with its tight turns and narrow streets making overtaking very difficult, but it was Fulvio who put down a very quick time early on. Last seasons champion Allard van den Hoeven left it until his last lap to get within 0.3s of Fulvio’s best time. Behind the top two it couldn't have been closer with Jason, Thomas Kimmich and Laurent Londes all within 0.03s of each other. The best of the rest were headed by Richard Barrett with Hank Belane hoping for better luck after his technical issues at Imola last week.

Race 1
At lights out it was Fulvio who made a good start ahead of Allard and Jason as the field funnelled into St Devote. Remarkably everyone got through without any incidents and again at the Lowes hairpin all drivers were very well behaved.

As the cars sped though the tunnel, Fulvio had already opened up a lead over Allard as Jason spun out at the Nouvelle chicane after clipping the tyre wall on the exit. Jason had to wait for the entire field to pass before he could spin his Alpine RSS around and set of after the Alfa’s of Omar and Taj.
Thomas and Laurent were battling for P3 as Thomas locked his brakes trying to slow down at St Devote. This allowed Laurent a run up the hill at Beau Rivage and challenge Thomas as the cars turned left into Casino square. But Thomas defended hard and kept his car in 3rd place.

Behind the leaders, Hank was busy keeping Richard and Steve at arms length while at the back, Jason was recovering from his earlier spin. Jason had a scare when he sped towards the Rascasse only to find a wall of smoke as Omar was having a major moment in 10th place.

Up front, Fulvio was 1.0s ahead of Allard with the battle for 3rd with Thomas and Laurent some 4.0s behind the leaders.

Fulvio had a sideways moment on the exit of the Rascasse and only just managed to gather it up as Allard got alongside but Fulvio had the line into the last corner and kept his position.

Lap 5 and Fulvio had gapped Allard who was falling back into the Thomas/Laurent battle and six laps later Allard had a huge slide in the fast left hander at Massenet and into into Casino square. Thomas clipped Allard’s car but survived as Laurent also got by Allard. Allard spent some time trying to get his car pointing in the right direction, something that was difficult between the barriers at Monaco.

Back in the pack, Steve was having an immense battle with Jason with Hank sitting behind waiting for a mistake. He didn’t have to wait long as Steve went wide at the swimming pool and Jason got through. Hank got passed Steve on lap 15 when Steve clipped the barrier, again at the swimming pool section.

Hank was lucky to avoid a major incident when he drove underneath a totally out of control Jason at the swimming pool as the race entered the final laps.

At the flag it was another win for Fulvio and the fastest lap too.


Race 2
As this was a double header sprint race, the grid was reversed in race 2 for the top 7 drivers. This meant that Jason was on pole with Hank and Richard starting in 2nd and 3rd.

There was some frantic racing going on behind with race one winner Fulvio side by side with Allard on the climb up Beau Rivage. Neither driver was giving anything away as they turned into Massenet but it was Fulvio who came out in front as they turned right into the Casino square to take P6.

Hank and Richard had made a good start and were hoping for a mistake from Jason up front while Fulvio was closing in on Laurent in P5. Allard spun out at the Rascasse while up ahead Fulvio got alongside Laurent as they exited the tunnel but locked his brakes at the chicane which allowed Allard through to take 6th place. But the battle for fourth was all about to change as on lap 6 when it all got a bit cosy as five cars entered the Rascasse line astern. Allard ran into the back of Laurent causing him to spin. Fulvio’s cat like reactions allowed him to jink to the left and avoid the roadblock.

At the front Jason had made to most of the clear track and lead every lap to the finish and did the fastest lap to add to his points total. While Richard was chasing hard, Hank managed to hang on to claim a well deserved P2 with Richard completing the podium and Thomas taking fourth place at the finish.

Fulvio now leads the championship by 4 points from Jason on dropped scores with Thomas in third place. Next time we are off to Canada and the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal on June 6th. We are back to a full 60 minute race with pit stops. We had some great racing here, very high driving standards and behaviour. We look forward to continuing this standard next time out.
Finally, huge thanks to Allard for the pre-race set ups, many of the drivers found these very useful around this difficult circuit.
